Assignment 1, Introduction

Hello ETEC 543 class,

Welcome to the fall quarter. I hope that everyone had a restful and relaxing summer break. If your break was like mine was, I guess you were working throughout the summer.

This is my 5th class in the ETEC program, third with Dr. Newberry. I have also completed EDUC 603, 605, and 607. I am a full time associate professor of mathematics at Riverside Community College, Moreno Valley campus where I teach both mathematics and karate. I am the dept. chair of both the mathematics discipline and the physical education discipline. I also travel out to Crafton Hills College once a week on Wednesday nights for my karate class that I instruct out there as well. I have been teaching at the community college level at both the Moreno Valley campus and Crafton Hills College since 1999.

As far as education, I have attended RCC, UCR and Cal State San Bernardino. I received by bachelor of science in mathematics from UCR, and my master of arts in mathematics from Cal State San Bernardino. I am returning to school for a second masters degree in the instructional technology field because I want to learn how to incorporate technology into my teaching style in the classroom. I haven't used much of technology until I started this program and the classes that I have taken so far have opened my eyes to new and innovative ways of teaching my students.

Some of my hobbies include studying karate (for the past 23 years!), camping and fishing in the Eastern High Sierras, playing computer and video games, and visiting the local casinos for occasional gambling and fun.

I am sure that this quarter will be fun and exciting time for all of us. I look forward to learning new material in the technology field in our class.

James

Hey James, good to see you in another class. It was nice in the past to have someone setting the bar :)

Looking forward to your response on the Belmont Report.

James,

It is nice to meet you. I work at Kucera Middle School. This is my 3rd year. I started out as a first year teacher there and really enjoy the students and staff. I too enjoy fishing. My dad has brought me up as a fisherman as soon as I could hold a fishing pole. Recently we have been ocean fishing out of San Deigo. In August we went on a 2 day trip and caught 40-50lb Albacore. My dad has a bass boat that we have not taken out in a few years. I hope to help him clean it up and do more local bass fishing.

Talk to you later,

Scott Usher

James,

I've probably bumped into you at Schatt's in Bishop or Dehy Park in Independence. I've been heading up 395 for almost 50 years. Fishing isn't for me, but I love everything else up there.

I appreciate your comment in my blog about math-and-technology. I present all my lessons digitally, but I definitely overlook animation and related media. I wrote an interactive slope-calculator which I haven't presented in class yet.

Hi, James. It's great to see you in this class. I echo jon r's comment. You definitely have high standards and I appreciate that. Just got back from a Tahoe camping trip. It was my first one and I will definitely be going back. See you online.

James, thanks you for offering your help. You have already helped me by being an example in how to create the introduction assignment. Since I'm not familiar with how to post a website, I have not been able to post any of the artwork. This is why I'm taking this program to learn how to post my work online.

Hi James,
I am so impressed by your blog and credentials...and most of all, the enthusiasm that you and all the students who have been in the MA program in Instructional Technology for a while, demonstrate. I just got on board last week and am running to catch up.. you can check out my blog at http://rebecca-etec543.blogspot.com/.
I just sent the url to Dr. Newberry so it may not even be up on Blackboard yet. I'm looking forward to learning more ideas from you and the other students, for creating education programs using technology. It seems like a very promising time to be working in this field.
Thanks for setting such a dynamic and inspiring example. Today I posted my first ever blog, signed up for my first ever domain name, and wrote two papers, so my head is spinning...I can see that this is going to be a great learning experience!

James, I am thinking of taking your advice with that math thing. I am recently enrolled in Calculus 212 and in order to complete the math program soon, it looks like I might have to take a year of leave of absense. Aside from math, I have a new blog because I was having difficulties posting on my old on. The new blog adress is ozziebarajas.blogspot.com
